Atrial Fibrilation

Learning Target

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a major risk factor for stroke, and the number of AF-patients is anticipated to rise dramatically in the next decades. Oral anticoagulation using vitamin-K antagonists (VKA) is beneficial for primary stroke prevention in AF-patients, but the long-term use of VKA has its limitations. Recently, a new class of modern oral anticoagulants has entered the field and may potentially change the management of stroke risk in AF: The present learning module presents an up-to-date overview of novel and established antithrombotic therapies for stroke prevention in AF.

Successful completion of the CME test at the end of the module will provide you with 3 CME points.

He is a past-president of the French Neuro-Vascular Society, president of the guidelines committee of the European Stroke Organisation, member of the Scientific Committee and Programme Committees of the European Stroke Conference, and member of the Board of Directors of the World Stroke Organization. He is responsible for the French postgraduate teaching programme on cerebrovascular diseases. Jean-Louis Mas is head of a research team (INSERM) at the Centre of Psychiatry and Neurosciences, Sainte-Anne Hospital, Paris. This Research team aims to identify the predictive factors of stroke, particularly of stroke recurrence, in order to optimize preventive strategies, and to evaluate therapeutic strategies by randomized clinical trials. His main scientific interests are carotid stenting versus surgery in patients with carotid artery atherosclerosis, prevention of stroke in patients with patent foramen ovale, asymptomatic coronary artery disease in patients with ischemic stroke, predictors of early stroke after transient ischemic attack, and post-stroke depression and triggers of stroke. He is the principal investigator of several multicentre studies or randomized clinical trials and has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, including papers in the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, JAMA, Stroke, Neurology, and Cerebrovascular Diseases, and edited several books.
